LEARN TO SKATeboard
We hold weekly women only skateboarding lessons at Clapham Common every Sunday afternoon at 1pm. Hitting the skatepark alone can be scary so we’re building a community of female skaters wanting to support each other and learn how to ride in a safe and fun environment. Skating is a great way to put yourself outside of your comfort zone by learning something new and exciting.
We have partnered with Skates & Ladders, a professional team of local skaters that have made their passion their job. They teach the lesson and show you everything you need to know to get started and improve your skills. The instructors are all fully trained and have spent years skating themselves. Most importantly, they have experience teaching girls, they understand that that we might need to take things a little slower and have our hand held when trying a new trick. They will provide everything that we need for the session including skateboards, helmets, pads and wrist guards. Of course, upon booking just let us know if you have your own kit.
The first session you will be introduced to skating including learning how to stand on your board, different parts of the skateboard, ways to stay safe and of course, riding your board. At the end of the session you will be given a level card so that you can tick off and monitor your progress! We have plenty of beginners are each session so you are never alone in starting out.
A lot of the girls are hooked after the first session and return the following week. The instructors have lots of experience in tailoring the session for different returners abilities. You’ll focus on something during each session whether it be learning how to ollie, skate down curbs, ramps, learning to kick turn or just generally improving your cruising.
Part of the fun of skating with Girlventure is the community that we create, most people turn up by themselves and then leave the sessions with new friends that are like-minded and share the same interests. There are girls that met each other at our very first Girlventure that still hang out outside of the sessions too so it truly is a great way to meet people in a big city.
After each lesson, we all tend to go for lunch (usually pizza..) so we can all get to know each other better, share stories and photos from the lessons and plan our next trick we want to learn. There are quite a few girls that are come back week after week to practice their skills so you’re bound to see a friendly face next time you come to a session!
